Coach Samuel G. Puryear, JR.
Director of Golf at Howard University; Author: Diamonds in the Rough
Samuel G. Puryear, Jr. is a native of Winston-Salem, N.C. He is a 1992 honors graduate from Tennessee State University. During his time as a collegiate golfer and team captain, he played under the leadership of Coach Dr. Catana Starks, the first woman to coach a men's Division I golf team. Mr. Puryear is currently a collegiate golf coach. Puryear's 18-year coaching career includes Stanford University, Michigan State University (MSU), Queens University of Charlotte, and Howard University.
Puryear became the first African American head coach at a Power Five Conference University (MSU 2008). To date, his coaching career has produced one NCAA National Championship, two HBCU Minority National Championships, one Big Ten Championship, more than 10 Coach of the Year honors, two Conference Carolina titles, two South Atlantic Conference championships, one MEAC championship, four Northeast Conference championships, and more than 10 NCAA Regional appearances. More than 15 of Puryear's former players have played in PGA Tour events, which includes one player participating in the Master’s and one PGA Tour winner.
He is also the author of Diamonds in the Rough: The Shining Story of Inspiration, Faith and Hope in East Lake. Available now on Amazon.
